Description

In November 2006, I made a travel in Thailand with my husband Elcet, where we saw marvelous flowers, among which lotus ones. I photographed these ones at Sukhotai, which was the earliest capital of Siam, and one of the most remarkable archaeological sites of Thailand. The lotus is the sole aquatic plant, the flower of which is not laid just on the surface of water. Its roots very often are growing in mud, but the immaculate flower is elevating in the sky. In that sense this plant is a symbol of Buddha’s life: Buddha, going beyond animist and hinduist beliefs, reached the supreme knowledge and wisdom. For the buddhists, the lotus is the symbol of the freedom of the spirit. The subtle perfume of this flower contributes to its sacred character. In Thailand, lotus flowers are traditionally laid down in front of altars, as gifts.
