This is classified as a "True Bug" as opposed to just a bug, lol. There were hundreds of these o on the Goldenrods this year but all have gone somewhere now and I haven't seen one in several weeks.
This particular bug is a plant eater. It has a long proboscis that it sticks into a plant so it can suck the juices out. It is not visible in this shot, but it is very similar to that on the bug that I will show tomorrow (even though tomorrow's bug is a predator that use it to suck the juices out of other bugs.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.

What fascinating legs! I shall look more closely at my (tiny) golden rod clump next season. We don't have these but there's bound to be something I've never noticed. Thankyou for your super work!
wonderful close up, we have them here too in Holland but not with such legs, so far I can remember
We do have something like this in the UK but I think they call them 'Shield bugs', because of the shape, looks like a sheild. This one looks a lot narrower than the ones I've seen pictures of, having never seen one myself. That camera of you's coupled with your finess takes some absolutely cracking shots Lee. The detail as always, fantastic. You can see the tiny hairs at the back of the head and even in between the thornlike growths of the left leg. The details again on the back of the bug, almost like a finger print. Awesome capture! Bravo!!!!!
great macro.
outstanding work
Very nice capture. You are so good at finding these critters. Bunny
These things always make me back away. Plant eater or not, they just don't look friendly. Very good detailed macro
great capture...
Great capture of this "true bug". Locals call them stink bugs (they do emit an odor when stressed). ;-)
