Description
Vodickova Street is something of a mess right now. City workers are re-laying the smaller paving stones that make up the side walk. They're doing it all by hand, so by day, all you hear is traffic and hammers pounding cubical stones into tight, grid like patterns. It's rather like the handiwork of ancients not yet familiar with such things as cement or mortar. The stones are just pounded into place and kept in place by the thousands of people walking over them.
Amid the construction, the barricades, and heaps of cube shaped paving stone, stray bits of garland flutter in the breeze. Those are actually the first hints of the Christmas season. Unfortunately the wind took the garland before I could get a picture of it, but as I was returning to the hostel where I'm staying, I passed this particular window, mercifully, the heap of yet-to-be used stones beneath the window were not in view. I couldn't resist trying to capture the play of color and shadow.

It's interesting about those streets; they are the same way in Puerto Vallarta, and also done painstakingly by hand, stone by little stone. They're hell on shocks, so half the cars sounds like their falling apart, even though they might be fairly new!! This is a great foto, dark, but fully capturing the spirit and feel of this season!!
Wonderful shot!
Very fine picture!
Good picture!
FABULOUS CAPTURE !!!!!
Beautiful scene Chip...I love the colors and I'm always amazed at how very well you do the night scenes!
It is a wonderful shot, Chip. I feel as a small child gazing in at the glitter. I love you night shots. This is no exception. It is superb. Hugs and stay safe and warm. Di. xx

Ohhh, so beautiful and very nice lighting and color on this christmas tree ! Excellent my friend ! Good day :)
A little garland sets the holiday mood. And enjoyed reading about those stone layers. CC
Is that Prague or Dortmund? I asked my mom if she remembered a Vodickova Street in Dortmund, but she didn't. The signs of Christmas are everywhere now. Nice colors of the seasons and offerings for the shoppers.
Great shot!!!!!!!!
wonderful capture...
Yeah, you can feel it coming, can't you! Take care, Chip.
This is a lovely composition Chip! The play with colour and shadow really compliment the entire mood and atmosphere of the photograph! I think you captured perfect timing, in spite of the wind "swiping" away the garland! :) I love the idea of the lights gently casting light upon the Holiday Cheer, it's truly a great arrangement. So much to see and amire in this photograph! Must say, I also like the idea of the footwear at the bottom---creates for an interesting scene which is very original and unique. You mention that "The stones are just pounded into place and kept in place by the thousands of people walking over them". This fits the "story" your image tells just perfectly! Made me smile.... this idea of shoes.. "First Glimpses" is beautiful and enticing, can't wait to see more ;)
Oh la la Chip, fabulous mood in this capture .... POV and colors are superb, I would the gold bag, OK!;-))) Amazing capture my friend!
Wonderful evolving colors and shapes from the dark.
The colors and imagination, is phenomenal! Good day!
Hey! I'm terribly late with my comments, but it's some kind of fun to see Christmas preparations in Febraury, Chip. It sorts things out, puts them in a more human order. There's a lot to say about Xmas anyway but I won't say it now. A pity there are only shoes for men in the window. Well, I'd take the red bag in the lower left then :-))
