Description
Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held image.
This is the 5th and last wasp in this series. I have only scratched the surface of all the different species in my area. Many are very very small.
To the best of my knowledge, the other four images in this series show wasps which do not sting. At least I have never been stung by any of them and I know of no one who has. Todays species does sting, lol. In fact, this one got me, but just barely. I had reached into a bucket to take out some fallen leaves and I did not see him. Apparently I brushed against him enough to trigger a defensive response. Even though I am allergic to stings, this wasp just injected a tiny bit of poison. It did not even raise a welt thank goodness.
This wasp is also different because it is a social wasp. It lives in a colony with many many others and they defend their hives aggressively. The other four are solitary wasps. Each goes it's own way and lives separately. They have no nest to defend.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.
BTW - tomorrows posting is a series all by itself. It is comprised of 7 images taken over 4 days. It is also of a subject I have been hoping to capture for some time but was unsuccessful till now. Come back to see what it is, lol.

very beautiful wasp Lee. I have been shy about trying to do macros on them. you have no fear however
Just amazing and not just the stunning photography! Stellar!
Like and organic machine. GREAT shot. I think this is one of your best! Never seen a red one either. Nice work!
Lovely colour.I'd have been put off by the attempt on my life, well done for persisting, it was well worth it!!
Incredible shot!! Super!
Remarkable shot...Well Done!
Amazing macro! Well done!
great capture...
I really like this image. The colors blend and are very pleasing to the eye. In fact, I caught myself viewing it longer than normal. Excellent setting. Good work Lee
Now this one really does look a mean critter, the others were interesting but this one is facinating. I have only ever seen black and yellow wasps before, this red one though looks evil, one to be very wary of. Again an outstanding capture with great detail. The feet look like they could do damage and the spikes sticking out from the leg joints. I know they are tiny but they look massive on my 19inch monitor. Bravo!!!!!
I will keep letting you capture these. Bees, wasps, and hornets are something I take great pains to avoid. At least I get to see your efforts and not worry about the allergic response to the stings. Excellent capture. Bunny
fantastic macro foto.
