Description
At the end of August, we decided to dig a pond in Marie’s garden.
Just two hours after the water was in the pond, the first dragonfly appeared !
And the next days, while we were busy planting flowers and plants in and around the water, the same dragonfly was flying very fast in circles, chasing away any intruder in his new territory…
Yesterday, his behavior was somewhat different : the dragonfly was now sitting on branches or stones along the water and I was able to take some pictures !
I’m proud and happy that this beautiful insect is the first inhabitant of our newly created pond !
I think (?) this dragonfly is a female Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea), also known as the Blue Darner.
In French : l’Aeschne bleue
In Dutch : De Blauwe glazenmaker
In German : Die Blaugrüne Mosaikjungfer
If you think this is a wrong identification, please E-mail me...
I uploaded a picture of a male in my microLaCoste series :
"microLaCoste #22:Southern Hawker"
For many reasons, I’m especially happy that my mantispidae picture was selected for LwitG (Last Week in the Gallery – week 39-2007 )

Eh bien tu as de la chance d'avoir un tel visiteur/habitant.
Il parrait qu'avoir des libellules chez soi est un gage de bonheur, eh be je te le souhaite du fond du coeur Michel.
Bonne soirée, Georges.
Congratulations on the new pond. I am sure you will find it adds a new gathering spot for a variety of new little critters. This early arriver is a perfect example and your capture of her is very well done. I am not at all familiar with Dragonfly species that do not occur in my area but her posture suggests that she may be laying eggs. Thanks for sharing. Lee
Beautiful macro work, excellent light and colour.
wow, excellent. just reminds you what a kick-ass artist God is.

Perfect macro !
And now you have a Dragon to fight for what is yours! This is magic!!!
looks like she is laying eggs to hatch in the water.exceptional macro and I find this breed to be hard to capture.they seem to be very uneasy around humans
