Description

Nikon 7900 image. This has been a good year for me with finding caterpillars. I have discovered a number of them that I have never seen before. Some very small and some a bit bigger, lol. Todays posting is not the most colorful I have found but it has some interesting aspects. It rolls itself up in a leaf like a "caterpillar cigar". It stitches the edges together with silk and uses this shelter for protection between feeding forays. Both ends of the tube are left open, one to enter/exit from and one to allow the caterpillar poop to be expelled from the tube after the feeding excursions. There are several hatchings a year and the Butterflies that hatch late in the season actually overwinter as adults and start the cycle again come spring. I hope to find some chrysalis this year. I include a pic of a Goatweed Butterfly egg and one pic to illustrate the size of this little green guy. The full size view is large enough to allow a close look at details. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Beautiful macro of this guy!...When you see these insects close up, it's pretty amazing to see how mother nature has given them each different tools/camoflauge and construction...all to allow them to play their part in the ecosystem and to give them each a chance of survival....But, I must say you have some pretty weird lookin' critters in your neighborhood...LOL!

Absolutely awesome detail, the head looks to be covered in warts as is th whole body come to that. It also looks to have some impressive armour for a caterpillar with the sections, yet it also looks soft and cuddly. A great find, another one I have never seen, I must take more notice of my surroundings. Thanks for sharing. Bravo!!!!!

Amazing how different this one is from the others you have posted. The chubbiness is wonderful but the texture is wonderful. Great shot!

Hi Lee, I've missed you .. I've fallen so far behind, and seem to never catch up. This is a great cattie shot. Seems whenever I shoot a caterpillar, only a small part of it is in focus.. how can I fix that?

astonishing detail Lee. you have a sharp eye for these critters. I went last night to change a porch light for a neighbor and when I removed the old one so many lizard eggs fell out.there must have been20. if any had been unhatched I would have tried to get them to hatch so I could take pictures

Great macro. It is great you include the pictures of the egg, and to compare size with your finger.
