Description
Nikon 7900 image.
I like grasshoppers but I don't take many photos of them. I have only posted maybe 2 or 3 images of them each year. I think it is because most of them are just variations of brown and black patterns or they are green, but every now and then one stands out when I see it.
This one is a perfect example of that. In the first place, he has a lot of bright yellow on him. Not so obvious from this pic is that this one is also pretty big (maybe 2 1/2 inches long). In addition to that, he was so involved in eating the Goatweed foliage, that he mostly ignored me.
When I take shots of very small critters, the depth of field is so shallow, the backgrounds become very pleasant swirls of harmonious colors. When shooting a critter this large, the backgrounds can be very distracting because a lot of the foliage is distinctly visible as separate objects and gives a cluttered look to the image.
The latter was the case in this situation. I decided to digitally edit out everything that distracted me and added a mellow background in its place.. I also rotated the image 90 degrees to the right to provide an easier POV for the viewer.
I do not know what species this big guy is but he is a good looking specimen of grasshoppers in general.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.

To quote a very famous sailor, "well blow me down!" (in case you don't recognize him, that's a quote from Popeye The Sailor Man.) This is a outrageously stellar shot. A macro that challenges all others. Wow. Absolutely amazing. Great postwork as well.
