Description
Nikon 7900 image.
Yesterday's posting showed a female Blue Dasher assuming this position and todays shows a female Eastern Amberwing doing the same thing.
This position (called oblisking) helps the Dragonfly cope with very hot temperatures. They point their tails towards the sun to minimize the amount of surface area that gets direct light. Not all species do this.
Thanks to all those who take the time to comment.

Great capture. Good DOF and great POV. Thanks for sharing this image and the info with us. I never knew that some do and some don't go into this position. That is very interesting. :o)
Wow, who would have thunk it! lol I figured these guys were just hamming it up for the audience. A really interesting shot of a very interesting pose.
great capture. and great information too. I was wondering what the deal was with so many dragonflies en pointe... lol.
Gorgeous details in this macro. Great colours and light
I have never seen one do this in the UK but then, the weather is never that good. I find you're images both refreshing and informative, please keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.
Another beautiful macro!
Superb macro! I haven't managed to find a cooperative dragonfly this year.
Answered the question before I could ask, I thought perhaps they were building! Those delicate wings are even more amazing in zoom!
