Description
H.G. Wells told a hypothetical story culled from his imagination of an invasion from the heavens of octopoidal Martians and their tripod war machine laying waste to the lands of England.
Perhaps he only got part of the story from someone else, and filled in the blanks with his imagination.
The Ma'uri had been infected with a fatal disease that was destroying their species. The origin of the dread disease was unknown to them. They were desperate to survive and used every means for their survival.
They would sometimes invade worlds to experiment on other species to find the cure. Their vaunted technology and history of science was not of value now.
The base they built on Mars, in the plains of Eunostos-NE of Olmpus Mons in the Rills of Vesta, is still there. The atmosphere shields the erected have long since failed and the base has been abandoned. Why the attack they planned to launch on the waiting Earth, that plagued Herbert Wells dreams, will just be a tale for another day.

I took Ollie from DAZ and turned him into an invader, and did the same to the DAZ War Machine and several other things to make the scene. I used Wings3d to make the Ma'Uri lift pack that the invader is wearing, did the displacement maps and materials for everything, and used the BG by Gene Fleeman for Mars (Available at www.planit3d.com).

Wow, this is really good! I have a feeling I went back in time, to the 50's. Great work. Of course, the mountains are too regular and clean but that's part of the charm. Very good!

That that's just damned clever! I love how you combined the lower elements of the DAZ Martian tripod with the central casing of the famous Jeff Wayne version. I never before considered that, but some time ago I did straighten the legs as you did to see how it might look. And turning cute lil' Ollie into the desperate Ma'Uri, that was truly inspired! He certainly no longer looks like a cuddly bath toy! Sincerely, Bill

Overall, I think this is GREAT! But, since this is for critique, it raises questions. Are the shapes in the distance natural or Martian-made? (You said this was a city.)If natural, the bump map needs to look more random. Also, I think the tentacles should interact more naturally with the ground. All this is MINOR...but... All in all, a very good image!

I've always been amazed by HG Wells's "War of the Worlds". Even as Jules Verne stuff experiences a last gasp as "Steampunk" appeal, Wells's work is more and more real, even the stuff that seems dated. Like how the Martians used Sirens to communicate. Radio had recently been discovered, but instead of latching on to it, he still used sound. I don't think he could have known, but Radio won't work on Mars like it does on Earth. With Mars not having a magnetic field and only a fractional atmosphere, Radio waves don't bounce back and forth. Radio is limited to line of sight only. In the future, if man colonizes mars, Radio will have to be either with a network of cell-phone like towers (?Balloons?) or with satellites. In the far future, perhaps the atmosphere will be re-structured and there will be some huge monolithic generator for a magnetic field to protect it, and then radio will work again on Mars.
