Description
Nikon 7900 image.
This is the same female Eastern Pondhawk Dragonfly as yesterday's posting. She is eating the same bug as yesterday but the process is a little further along, lol. At this stage, the legs have been crunched up or discarded.
It is quite remarkable to see how wide a Dragonfly can open their mouth. The hinged arrangement of the lower jaw swings it down like the tail cargo door on a big military plane.
Although the majority of their food is so small one cannot really see what they are catching as they dart this way and that, some of them can eat prey that is quite large.
Tomorrow's posting of a male Eastern Pondhawk as it eats another Dragonfly illustrates this quite well.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.
