Description

Nikon 7900 image. I recently posted 2 images of Dragonflys (7th Dragon of the Season - a mature male blue Dasher and 8th Dragon of the Season - a female Blue Dasher) that showed small round dark colored bumps on the underside of their bodies. I was pretty sure these were some sort of parasite and not Dragonfly eggs. I have done some research since then and these bumps are indeed a species of mite. I could not find out if these infestions were harmful to the host Dragonflies. Todays posting once again shows some of these mites but these are Red. This is a juvinile male Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis). The female has no blue in the body. The mature males will have metallic green eyes and much more blue on their abdomen. I have recently purchased a reference guide for Dragonflies and it has been of tremendous help in identifying my Dragonfly captures plus it is so full of usefull info , my head hurts, lol. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Now that's a macro! when you start taking stellar quality focused shots of dragonflies and THEN take pictures of the mites on their bodies...well... I've seen it all now. This is such an incredible shot! Awesome. Fantastic...

I'm with them two ^^^^ ! Shame I can only give a 5! I tried catching a dragonfly yesterday, but don't think my ten year old daughter is the ideal companion when quiet is needed... Lol

I have collected on and off drqagonflies and this is the first time I have seen parasites on a dragonfly. I also agree with a previous comment that this wonderful photograph has an illustratin quality to it and what I really would like to know is how you manaed to get the dragonfly come to you, I would love to use this trick myself. Thank you for sharing and have a great weekend. egmont

Outstanding macro. I do hope those mites aren't too dangerous to this darling little dragonfly though. Beautiful colours and excellent centering. Amazing details in this superb capture. xx

I appreciate the interest in this image and also at having it included in LWitG as well as all the comments, but I must clear up an apparent misunderstanding. The red bumps on the underside of the Dragonfly are not eggs. They are parasitic mites. Dragonflys do not deposit their eggs on the underside of their bodies and besides that, this is an immature male, lol. Lee
