Description
Nikon 7900 image.
When I was a kid, I can remember my Grandmother calling these "Angel Flies". I have no idea if she really knew what they were.
I have seen them numerous times since then but never closely. They just appear to be floating puffs of white floss and when I attempted to catch any of them, all I managed to get was a smudge on my fingers.
After getting this shot, I did some research at "Whatsthatbug" and eventually discovered that they are not flies at all but are "Wooly Aphids". I didn't even know that aphids had wings. Turns out that this species usually does not have wings but every now and then they produce a generation of them in order to spread further than usual.
The white fluff is actually a waxy substance they exhude.
Thanks to all who take the time to comment.
