Description
The Dust Bowl of the 1930s lasted about a decade. Its primary area of impact was on the southern Plains. The northern Plains were not so badly effected, but nonetheless, the drought, windblown dust and agricultural decline were no strangers to the north. In fact the agricultural devastation helped to lengthen the Depression whose effects were felt worldwide. The movement of people on the Plains was also profound.
Poor agricultural practices and years of sustained drought caused the Dust Bowl. Plains grasslands had been deeply plowed and planted to wheat. During the years when there was adequate rainfall, the land produced bountiful crops. But as the droughts of the early 1930s deepened, the farmers kept plowing and planting and nothing would grow. The ground cover that held the soil in place was gone. The Plains winds whipped across the fields raising billowing clouds of dust to the skys. The skys could darken for days, and even the most well sealed homes could have a thick layer of dust on furniture. In some places the dust would drift like snow, covering farmsteads.

Excellent!
It is like the "kalima" here in Spain... nearly surreal the light it produces. Superb captures Richard !
Would you like a bowl of dust with those fries?? Yes and Super Size it, PLease!!! Cool Pics!!!!
Interesting ... and well done!
Outstanding shots!! Never seen a dust bowl. This is amazing!
Very eerie and still seeming. I'm sure it wasn't with all that dust blowing around. Excellent captures Richard.
Excellent photographic report for an interesting site !
Amazing reportage and facts. The dust in the air is unthinkable.
A fantastic work!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic and creative realization my friend.....!!!!
That is so horrible! You can barely see in front of you...I bet the dust is terrible on machinery.
Excellent captures all combined in this wonderful collage! Fantastic work!
wowwww, so beautiful pictures and excellent mood:)
Fabulous shots, and even more important, fabulous news about your sister-in-law! Thanks for the explanation of the Dust Bowl.
interesting shots...!
Hey, dear Richard. Superb captures all!! Thank you for explaining to us. We have 80 mile per hour winds here, sometimes :-( Scary, but no dust. Too much rain... Richard, I too am elated at your sister in laws progess... It has been a very hard time for your dear family. The waiting is the worst.. Gentle hugs for you all. Di.
Very interesting photograph and very interesting story. It reminds me the songs of Woody Guthrie and pictures like "Grapes of wrath". Thank you for remember me this!
OMG, shades of THE GRAPES OF WRATH! Great collage of the eerie conditions. Seems almost other worldly, with the orange color and blurred sun effects. Superb captures of this phenomena.
Great news about your sister-in-law, you will all be so relieved. These are really great shots and I am so glad that I'm not there. Interesting colour with the sun shot. It must have been pretty devestating to the farmers to see their crops just blow away in the wind.
Freaky situation, the farmers in OZ have stuffed-up the land as well, mainly by removing every single tree and poor farming practices ! It's good to hear your brothers wife is on the mend and an interesting, but scary collage ! ~Cheers~
Great clear captures here Richard and sounds like good news also! hugs )) hope all keeps going well:
Amazing indeed
Great news for your sis-in-law. Great shots, too. I've been in plenty of differeent weather conditions, but never a duster!
Dear Richard, After my weekend off from flight training - which turned into a catch up with work weekend and was anything but free time for rest, Im running a little behind on things here at Renderosity, but I hope to catch up by morning!!! Its really been a blast and a lot of fun, but the hours are starting to get very long!! Ill almost be ready to get back to work so I can rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-) While Im on vacation and doing pilot training, Im going to need to continue doing a lot of cut and pasting with just a tiny little real comment added!! Im really sorry, but I just dont have much time right now to write my usual wacko stuff! Ill be back on March 3rd!! That's such wonderful news about your sister-in-law!!!!! I really hope everything keeps progressing well!!! She and your whole family will remain in our prayers and hearts!!!!!! The "dust bowl days" were a really interesting period of time - at least to look back upon - I'm sure they weren't any fun to live through them. Your photos of the mini version are really amazing! Sometimes we don't realize how close we are to edge in a lot of ways!!! It wouldn't take much of a drought to bring the dust bowl back again!!! Excellent photographs!!! Love ya!!! Meredith
super . guess no outside painting that day lol
First, I am thrilled that that the stem cells have taken and are producing! What could be better news than that! And then, the shots you got of all that dust blowing around are awesome, I especially like that last one, the lower right one! Very dramatic with the trees branches silouhetted (sp?, too lazy to look it up) against the dove grey sky!
Wow Richard! Awesome shots! Bravo! Wonderful news regarding your Brother's Wife's progress!
Glad your sister-in-law is doing better! Great shots!
Very interesting..fantastic captures Richard! Very happy about your sister-in-law :)
ohhh send this mist to me please ;) I love the last one the most - crown of the tree is super ! and this wave there
