Description
Red pandas have a bear-like body with thick russet fur. The belly and limbs are black and there are white markings on the side of the head and above the small eyes. They have what looks like black tear markings from each eye.. The thick bushy tails with light-brown rings, pointed ears and a pointed snout, has cast some doubt by some scientists if they may be more related to racoons but the evidence is far from clear.
Red pandas lead solitary lives, except for mothers with cubs. They are slow-moving on the ground but are remarkably agile in the trees. This one was able to carry her cub from a tall tree going forwards with some ease..
The IUCN classify red pandas as Endangered, and they are on CITES: Appendix I. They are protected in Nepal and China. Habitat loss is thought to be the major reason for their decline in the wild.

I just love these red pandas! I didn't even know they existed until I visited the Chengdu Panda Center in China back in 2001. They had a bunch of them together and there was a lot of fighting. If they are normally solitary I guess that follows. They reminded me a lot of raccoons the way they danced around and played - that and the markings sort of being inverted on their faces. I can see why people would assume they are related.
Tender but tough. Always a great photo/bio. thanx ;-)
