Description
I spent some time in the subtropical part of South Africa (Tzaneen for those who Google) during the festive season. Where Ferns stand 7 to 15 feet tall and palm forests abound. Subtropical fruit and lazy afternoons mingle together...
This photo was taken of the cones of the Cycads, a South African species which is endangered. Cycads could easily be listed as one of the Big 5Â in the "primitive" or fossil plant kingdom.
I found the converging straight lines and curving repetitive shapes quite fascinating - nature playing with art?

WOW!!! What a lovely couple! Shots and cones! lol. Excellently presented too. I'm sure you had a great time in Tzaneen - was it as hot as Tzaneen can get this time of year? Have a wonderful eve, Oom! 8;o)
The colors are terrific. Great shot as well. Glad you got to capture these while they are still here. Aloha and have a great 2007.
Lush and beautiful. Looks so warm and balmy there too! Excellent shots Piet!
Wow these are freaking amazing. I think it's something when I find a pine cone 12inches long LoL. What makes this endangered? Maybe I should googled them..LoL..Thanks for sharing Piet:0)bonita
Sublime captures, Oom Piet. Very beautiful colours here and it looks so warm!! I am sorry this superb plant is endangered. Hugs. Di.
Great presentation and two beautiful pictures! Well done!
Absolutely most beautiful shot!*****!
Beautiful, I like artsy! :) And I love plants more than animals... (don't throw tomatoes at me lol) Wonderful photos! Hope you took pictures of the very tall ferns too ;) Liked the history also, thank you.
Dyptic very interesting and extremely well worked! Thank you for your comments which touch me!
Lovely capture Piet! Yes, the converging leaves focuses on those bright cones and the contrast between the green leaves and orange cones is amazing. These plants grow very slowly I believe. Apparently it grows something like a cm a year - I may stand corrected. Anyway, I have never seen a cone this big and colourful. Stunning!
Beautiful capture...this is something I don't get to see everyday unless watching t.v., thank you for sharing...
super Photo`s!
How fascinating! And you did an excellent job of showing this to its best form. Lovely and, yes, I can see the primative plant nature of it. Wonderul!

I love the whimsical and very appropriate title. As usual the photography and presentation are superb. Mike
Very interesting shot Piet, I've never seen this fruit before. The Tropical plants are incredible, so rich and usually so good too ;o))))) Have a nice night my friend. Hugs
Lovely work Piet, nature does show us how to do things in style so well. I love the colours and the contrast of lines and curves. Well composed my friend. Jenny
beautiful, impressive, fractal design within nature... great photo!
Woah - brilliant images and equally luscious colors. Great detail, too! It doesn't have to be a big animal - sometimes plants are as amazing as them. Compared to that is what we call art - well - not quite up to it... Great Work, Piet.
Great captures of the Cycads, which I thought at first were some kind of robot warriors from Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica. The cones are magnificent in texture as are the tree/plant fronds. Well done!
they are of stunning beauty and thanks for the link. I learned something today, not saying I will remember next week--but that is how it goes
Wonderful photography Piet, see plenty of cycads, but never any that bare fruit, thanks for sharing Stuart
Nature has a way of playing with geometry in grand displays that we feeble mortals could never dream up. Your eye for the art here is absolutely splendid. :-)
I have a few Cycads (sago palm) in my yard, but not this beautiful variety. Beautiful shots that make a fantastic collage!
