Description
I spent some time in the subtropical part of South Africa (Tzaneen for those who Google) during the festive season. Where Ferns stand 7 to 15 feet tall and palm forests abound. Subtropical fruit and lazy afternoons mingle together...
This photo was taken of the cones of the Cycads, a South African species which is endangered. Cycads could easily be listed as one of the Big 5Â in the "primitive" or fossil plant kingdom.
I found the converging straight lines and curving repetitive shapes quite fascinating - nature playing with art?
Thank you for visits and kind comments to a previous upload which did well in 2006:

you like on the lines and curves. this is cool. thanks for shareing
I love this plant. It sort of looks like a cross between a pine apple and a pine cone or something. :-)
Nice one Busi. I believe this is a very spectacular capture as this species of Cycad only produces cones every 17 - 35 years. And the most interesting is Cycads are male or female and pollination is dependant on only one specific insect. This why reproduction take such a long time and also why they are so endangered. Great photo Oom Piet. In my book this compares to capturing a photo of the Bearded Vulture in its natural habitat, just to totally amazing.
Superb presentation and captures of these beautiful cycads. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year :D
Thanks for the info and for sharing the photo's, which are captured very well, of this very special plant / fruit. Have a nice day Henk
Those are some pretty darn crisp shots youve got there buddy. The colors are also really beautiful. Thanks for telling us what fruit it is as well...i had guessed pineapple..sigh...i soooo suck at identifying anything that grows. #:o/ Have a great day!!!!
WOW! Really great shots! Like it !!
Wonderful capture of these beautiful cones. Nice capture and presented in a stylish manner!!
Very interesting !! Thank you to make me know that fantastic plant allthow if to be protected !! Your previous in 2006, you add in thumb, is stunning, Piet You get a great artistic photo' talent and peek ! I am happy to see you sign Busi again, I like a lot that... And for the new year, a little funny joke (for my son not funny but bad...) : as said a french radio reporter yesterday : "the Bond's year" because, he said, in french it's "l'ann 2007 or l'ann de 007"(two is deux in french, "deux" gets the same phonetic than "de" which means of or to ) Hugs q:)Magali
a extraordinary and geometry shot with a very net exposure
With this view I can almost smell the tropical air. So lovely. It reminds me of a giant boutonnie! :0)
This is beautiful Piet, I love the composition of these photos, particularly the way in which you've captured the depth, and the way that these lovely and detailed cones seem to fit so perfectly, almost cuddle into the arms of the ferns.... A Brilliant image my friend, Bravo!
More of Africa's exotic beauty. This plant looks like a tasty cousin of pineapple.
Stunning photos! I bet these are really fantastic to see!
Aha! Sjoe! Twee brode nogal! Wowzers! ;0)
Beautifully shot and presented,Piet. You did a lovely job with this. I too, love the repeating lines and curves of these. I bet they'd also look great in black and white.Well done my friend, and hoping you are having a most wonderful new year. -M :^)
beautiful presentation and indeed, fascinating natural fractals!
Nature is VERY artistic ... thanks for sharing this with us! It's awesome!

Great pics ! Like the lines as you remark.
Excellent work!
The top!
The way those spikes take off from the cones is really well composed.
Beautiful work Piet and lovely colours. Superb again
Oh so beautiful plants. And you captured them so prof. Well done.
Aren't these amazing I can see why you wanted a photograph. You sound to have had a great holiday to take some different shots. I like how you have presented these too.
