"Nothing is really so poor and melancholy as art that is interested in itself and not in its subject." ~ George Santayana "All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another." ~ Anatole France "All my joys to this are folly, Naught so sweet as Melancholy." ~ Robert Burton "Melancholy is the pleasure of being sad." ~ Victor Hugo
Melancholy is an odd word that describes quite a complex emotion. It is wistfulness that has matured into something deeper. It is sadness with a touch of glamor. Some even aspire to it, revel in it. Personally, I'll take happiness and contentment any day. :') mel-an-chol-y [mel-uhn-kol-ee]

a difficult emotion well captured, well done with the tones too! cant have the image to vibrant now can we :) The white space is a bit distracting for me to be honest, but overall a great capture :)
GMTA Kort ! ....I, too, posted a pic today about melancholy ! This is a poignant and touching capture. hugs
Fabulous portrait which got a real impressive face and expression! It's a perfect motive for the Genre: Atmosphere/Mood! Excellent posting!!!
Definately a complex emotion!! And masterfully conveyed in your image!! I also love Albrecht Durer's illustration.
Complex indeed. But you sure captured it....its all in those sad eyes. Excellent! The muted tones are perfect for it. Oh and i love your avatar...although my cow-friends has a different message.
Very nice portrait, Kort :) Sorry for being so invisible, but I'm recovering slowly from a couple of surgeries.
excellent shot .)
Difficult subject well interpreted Kort, well done and good luck!
Interesting portrait of that "M"word I've been spelling wrong for years, I thought it was 'meloncholy'...DOH, I'd better get my spellchecker tuned ! KKK ~Cheers~ :)
great portrait....
its so diffucult to capture a mood like this and you have done a perfect job!
Lovely profile and magnificent capture, but after reading the text I'm now deeply depressed. BYW, ever heard the song, "My Melancholy Baby?"
Yes, it's really talking about melancholia. I love it!
What a depressive image, Kort... So I guess you did it right ;o)) or should I say ;o(( About your first quote from Santayana: I couldn't agree less...
Excellentissime portrait...perfect tone and crop for the mood ! :~)
wowwww, very nice and beautiful picture. Good day ;)
Fantastic portrait and postwork with touch of green color! Superb!*****!
Good shot , looks good melancholia in this picture . ~~~GRRRRRRRRR
a very deeply emotional photo done very well.
I love how you de-saturated this...as if 'melancholy' is a state of emotional 'de-saturation'...which it is,actually.Well done,my friend.-M :^)
A picture is worth a million words. Excellent job teacher. Aloha
I'm a big fan of HAPPY too! ;) Superb capture of the emotion though! Bravo!
You certainly captured the sad look but background is messy and ruins the effect a bit esp the white space
this gives some new meaning to "won't you be my melanchly baby!", goodoldboy remembers this one! I like the mood of this portrait.......
"How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable/Seem to me all the uses of this world!" ** Hamlet,* Act I, Scene II* by William Shakespeare A beautiful portrait, Kort, despite its theme, (unfashionable in today's Zoloft world!). You are right about the complexity of melancholy; the word which itself seems far more appropriate than the simplistic, clinical term, depression. Kudos, for the subject and commentary. Well done!
