Apart from being the largest pigeon in the world about the same size as a Turkey in my opinion surely the most beautiful.. They are quite tame in the wild, and as a result came close to suffering the same fate as the Dodo which was another member of this family, and is found in the wild only in New Guinea and some smaller offshore islands nearby.
Very little is known about them as they live in very dense forest this one was taken at Bristol Zoo. Having gone into the place on the way back from a trip to the local river estuary

The extermination of the Dodo, partcularly by the Dutch, which began for reasons of greed, seemed to end in pure rage for slaughter. So too with the Tasmanians, whom the Dutch and British also exterminated, despite the fact that they were human beings, and utterly defenseless....
