vkoontz commented on my "Field of Armor" posting that the Aberdeen Proving Ground's "JagdTiger with the divits" was a favorite. Here is the 71 ton Jagd-(hunting)-panzer Mark VI for his viewing pleasure. You can see where the U.S. Army took target practice with the hits on the front glacis and gun mantle. (See chuter's comment for the real story.) It is not likely that any Allied tank or antitank gun could do damage from this angle because the JagdTiger had frontal armor up to 9.8 inches thick. Meanwhile the 128 mm (5 inch) gun could whack any tank in the Allied arsenal. This fuel guzzler was prone to mechanical breakdown (too heavy), and vulnerable to both air attack (size and speed)and even a determined infantry assault from the rear using explosives and bazookas in wooded areas like the Ardennes Forest. Not much of a hunter, it was a better defensive weapon.

chuter's original comment was how this JadgTiger shot it out with a column of U.S Army Shermans and tank destoyers in March of 1945. The scars are from ineffectual hits by the American guns.

One problem, it's "Jagdtiger" not "Jadgtiger". The G comes in front of the D. It translates roughly as "Hunting Tiger" when the G is first. Google it. I transpose letters a lot too.

Very cool! I stuck my fist up to the wrist into the non-penetrating hole near the tow ring to the photo's right, and I'm a big guy (6"2"). Thanks for the tip on this great pic!
Wonderful shot. Of course, the idea was not to argue with any modern(in war terms) German armor head on. You would more then likely come of worse. A very rare piece of armor.
