Description
This ancient Buddha statue sits serenely in the forecourt of the Bayon (also known as Angkhor Thom), straddling a passageway leading up to one of the fifty-four towers of this structure.
Interesting to note that while Angkor Wat, only a century older, was dedicated to the pantheon of Indian dieties of Hinduism, Angkor Thom was more decidedly Buddhist.
Following the Cham invasion of Angkor Wat in 1177, the Khmer king, Javayarman VII, decided to switch in the hopes of a more effective means of religious protection. Ironically, almost two hundred years later, it was the Thais (another Buddhist kingdom) that brought ruin to the Bayon.
