Subject: Carrera network rendering using Mac'PC nodes

R_tist ( ) posted Thu, 12 January 2006 at 1:02 PM · edited Fri, 03 July 2026 at 1:40 PM

I am thinking of adding a new G5 with the Intel Pentium D chips to my network and was wondering if it is possible to use this computer as a render node station. Or run C4Pro on the Mac and use the PC's as nodes. Thanks.

according to cararra's info, render nodes have to be the same OS as the main workstation. mac's for mac's, windows for windows.

My understanding was that changed when they released 4.03. (I think that was the version.) I haven't had the chance to try it though, or on C5Pro either.

I was not aware of the change and unfortunately, we have only macs here so I can't test it for you. good luck finding the answer though.

For now Carrara does not run on the Mac based on Intel processors so not it would not work. We are planning to release a version of Carrara for the platform later on. You can mix Mac and PC in a network rendering. It works in most cases but sometimes there are problems. For instance, physics do not give the same result on Mac and Windows so you end up with disconnected tiles... I would recommend not mixing the platforms if possible. You will get the best results by using the same platform.

Thanks Charles. Any idea how long before the Mac/Intel compatable version will be released? Will it come in the form of a patch or upgrade? Should I assume the render node (for now) will not work as well? The reason for adding the Mac is that it recognizes 16 gigs of ram. I currently can only access 9 gigs using 5 stations. Thanks again.
