Subject: Ground Control 2.0 now available

ewinemiller ( ) posted Tue, 07 September 2004 at 8:11 PM ยท edited Mon, 06 July 2026 at 10:09 PM

Hi folks,

Today we announce the immediate availability of Ground Control 2.0. What's new in Ground Control 2.0?

  1. A new Low Memory Mode lets low memory machines import bigger elevation maps.
  2. Bilinear Filtering produces a higher quality mesh when Resolution is less than 100%.
  3. Increased compatibility with USGS and VistaPro DEMs, including the output from sdts2dem.

The upgrade is free for existing Ground Control customers. You can download the update or try out Ground Control from the links below.

I was just wondering, is Ground Control still a must-have plug-in once one haves Carrara 4? It looks like the landscape modelling has been upgraded in the new release. Do you have any insight in that, Eric?

I cannot say much about C4 right now, but existing Ground Control customers will not be disappointed. Regards, Eric Winemiller Digital Carvers Guild 3D plug-ins for Carrara http://digitalcarversguild.com

Hoofdcommissaris,

We've just been been given the go-ahead to talk about C4. I think in C4, Ground Control will be even more of a must have plug-in. C4's terrain modeler will import r32 files (World Machine, maybe some other apps that dump raw 32 bit floating point values to a file) and is a terrific tool for building your own terrains, however it doesn't cover USGS DEM, HGT, BIL, Terragen, or VistaPro DEM files. The new version of Ground Control for C4, in testing now, is fully integrated into the new Terrain Modeler. With the tight integration, you get the wicked fast, low memory usage of the old Ground Control's import to terrain and there is no loss in precision!

Additionally there is a new tool included with Ground Control that let's you use Master Shaders in the Terrain modeler to perform a variety of displacement effects. Below is an image I built using the new tool and a simple Tile shader for displacement. Veloute was used to shade the structure.

Thanks! (it's a sales pitch, I guess, but a very strong one) I guess I will be coming your way, once I have C4 on my hands!
