Description
Taken in Laurelhurst Park in Portland this past weekend. According to Wikipedia, "In 1919, the Pacific Coast Parks Association named Laurelhurst Park the "most beautiful park" on the West Coast, and in February 2001 it was the first city park ever to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places."
I don't know what kind of tree this is, but I was struck by the unusual bark structure. It looked kind of grotesque to me, as if it was covered by burls dripping like melted wax. I took this from a distance & now I'm sorry that I didn't get up closer, but my wife was cold & my grandson was getting restless, so we just moved on...

I love Laurelhurst Park; I lived across the street from it for a while when I was in my 20s. I'm sure even better now. I have no idea about the tree identity, but it's very cool!

Burls was my first thought but I really like your thought of burls dripping like melted wax and then there is the mystery of the semi-iridescent strip running down the face of the trunk. You will just have to go back and complete a further investigation! :
