Description
No series of Birds Of Prey would be complete without the Barn Owl whilst endearing they Mate for Life they are the ultimate killing Machine and can hear a mouses heartbeat from across a 40-50 foot barn...
Some facts of interest:...
Plumage: The plumage covering the head, back & outer wings are of a rich apricot colour; scattered with silvery blue mottling & the frontal area & under parts of the wings are of pure white, eyes are black & surrounded by a distinctive white facial disk that is heart-shaped.
Female Markings: Distinctive black speckling on frontal area under wing parts & a distinctive dark pencilled line around the facial disc together with an apricot coloured necklace.
Male Markings: Under parts & facial disc are of pure white.
Hearing Capabilities: Barn Owls mainly hunt by sound rather than by sight. With it's acute hearing the Barn Owl can detect the slightest movement & sound of its prey. The ears are set asymmetrical, one higher than the other under the feathering of the inside edge of the facial disc, located next to the eyes. The facial disc acts as an amazing sound funnel, collecting & filtering sound. This allows the Owl to detect the movement of its prey with complete accuracy.

WOW amazing facts I had no idea about. Very interesting! Ive never seenm such a close up of an Owl. They are quite beautiful! A few yrs ago, when my hubby would drive the Dinner Train thru the beautiful woods to get to columbia winery there always sat 2 beautiful white Owls under one of the bridges. Everytime the train would go by they would fly out & when passed would go back under the bridge where they lived for well over 10 yrs. I always loved seeing them. Now they are both gone. No one knows what happened to them, but they were sure a beautiful vision!! Outstanding shot!!

Wow...tough to add to what's already been said...brilliant work Danny, the details in the feathers is awesome.
Aother magnificent creature... we have them here in the backyard...! The crows however would like for them to leave..... crows are very territorial and get quite vicious with the owls if they feel they are being encroached on....
Such a fascinating creature! The plumage in owls is so unique compared to other birds. Thanks for the educational words. Was this bird in captivity? Excellent image regardless.
