Description
Originally scheduled for retrofit to re-enforce her unsually thin plate, HMS Hood was diverted to take part in the hunt for Bismarck, the 52,600 ton super German battleship. HMS Hood was battle cruiser built for speed and gun power over protection. In the early morning hours of May 24, 1941, HMS Hood closed rapidly on the Bismark and as she turned to open fire with all her guns, a shell shot by Bismark pierced the thin plate of her forward magazine and she was torn apart by a vast explosion. There were three survivors of a crew of over 1000 souls. Bismark was herself sunk three days later in another engagement after her rudder was jammed by an air torpedo attack. The British battleships Rodney and King George V closed and reduced Bismark to a floating hulk. A torpedo by the cruiser Dorsetshire finally sent her to the bottom with a loss of over 2000 of her crew.
This scene depicts the explosion of HMS Hood under barrage from Bismark.

Absolutely stunning! This is a wonderful work of art. Thanks for sharing it!
Very realistic... atmosphere is fantastic and the distant fires!
Looks like a movie shot! Great!
wow love those lights
Very moody picture! Battleship Bismarck was sunk by her own crew, however. The survivors have kept telling that for 63 years. Shipwreck examinations have corroberated this. Anyway, an isue of vanity, the result was the same.
Absolutely stunning!!!Atomosphere and mood are fantastic my friend, wonderful imagination!!V
lookoo is correct. When the Germans realized that the ship couldn't be saved, the Captain ordered the ship to be scuttled (sank). But you image is awesome!
I agree very nice image! I am a huge fan of Naval Warfare. Now lets see "Death of YAMATO"!! "I "Don't Care how you do it.. you must sink the Bismark." ;-)
Magnificent use of the sky, superb lighting. Just marvelous!
hmmm..Yamato..that was much later..and then it became a space ship in Star Raiders..but that's another story..;) great work.
Excelient sea scene. I love how you do the atmosphere in these scenes. Got my ** vote **
historical image & of course very well done... couldn't help it, the old childhood game popped in my head... you sunk my battleship! :]
Looks very good, perfect picture!
Absolutely brilliant piece!! Awesome work.+ my vote as well.
Nice Job. I seriously doubt the story the German sailors are telling. If they had "decided" to sink her, there would have been fewer casualties on their side, since they could have allowed the men time to abandon ship.
Very dramatic
Great emotion piece
