Description

I wrote this while living in New Hampshire (US)and my kids were 2 and 4 yrs old. Small town life on a rainy day in autumn with chill winds and grey sky...Beki and Dave were enjoying my colossal oatmeal-raisin cookies while I scribbled this down watching their faces peer out the window at their toys in the rain. Please enjoy it as much as they did! The rain is raining all around, all around this tiny town. It makes the people run and hide, makes them take a taxi ride. It waters all the flowers, true, but makes the babies all turn blue. Raging torrents swell the stream, lovers take the time to dream. Rowboats all stay on the shore, mothers beg, "Oh, please, no more!" Children splash in puddles round, worms crawl out upon the ground. Autumn leaves stick to the street, trod upon by booted feet. The mailman hurries on his route, meowing cat just got the boot! Woodsmoke curling up the sky, grandma just let out a sigh. Raindrops make the horses snort, ships afraid to pull into port. Town officials eye the dike, Davy eyes his new red bike. The rain is raining all around, all around this tiny town. --Ramona October 1982

The rhythm in this is very tightly done - and what you've depicted seems quite universal. Well done on writing something so fun for your kids!

This would make a terrific stand-alone children's poem ... or an intro to a book of kid's stories about a ... tiny town. There's a challenge for you - now write the book!

Awesome! I can see how children would just love this poem, but I also love the fact that it was so much fun for me to read as well. I love the rhythm and the imagery you create with your words. Brilliant piece!

When I was a kid, we all played in the rain and mud. Must be different for Yankees. Nice poem though. :)
