Description

This is by far, the most massive fly I have ever seen. I wish I had time to plop a coin down beside him to give some sense of his size. I had just gotten out of the shower when I heard my roomate screaming at me from upstairs, "Matt! Get up here right now and bring your camera!" So I picked up my camera and frantically ran up the stairs (Towel falling from my waist) to encounter the monstrosity you see above. He had flown into the kitchen and flown back out agian before I could get more than 10 shots. This fly is well over an inch in length. I couldn't find it on Bugfinder.com. Hopefully Enmos or Danob can help me out with this one. Thanks for looking!

First of all what a colorful blue-a$$ fly! ... but we are left wondering 'who or what is the monstrosity? and its connection to the falling bath towel?? LOL. Glad to see you found its common name [JG]. Quite surreal in that leather-loungue-lizard look!

What a name, and horseflies often bite people (I've been bitten). Glad losing the towel was not more of an event than it might have been.

I was going to say as jimry, probably some sort of horsefly.... we've got some here that are roughly an inch or more with the most fantastic neon green eyes.... Unable to get close with the camera though.... Love this one's beautiful blue butt..... Fab shot Matt!

If I knew You had just gotten out of the Shower...I would have screamed for You too...sigh...this is similar to the Aussie Blue Bottle Blow Fly, first they lay their Eggs on the rear end of Sheep....then they fly off with them, like an Eagle with it's Prey. I guess We have lost You to the Insect World now.....and, You will be planning Trips to the Amazonian Rain Forest next....buuuuuuuuuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzz!

Oh my! blushes picks up your towel and hands it back to you Oh my! ;) I think Tedz may have a point about the blow fly, that was my first thought when I saw it, but I guess it could also be some kind of horsefly! :)
