Description
This image is one I have wanted to do for awhile. And I have been working on it for days.
It is based on a very short-story-within-a-story. Years ago I read Shadowland by Peter Straub,
a pretty scary book. In the first few pages, one character tells another, the tale of the "King of cats".
I am pretty sure Mr. Straub based this on some old fable. So here is my slightly altered version:
One day a young man was walking cross country to visit a good friend. He came upon an old church,
and stopped to rest. Suddenly to his surprise and amazement, he saw something unbelievable!
A long procession of cats came marching around the church, in rows of two. At the head of this strange
procession were four cats carrying a small coffin. This odd little coffin bore a gold crown. The cats were
carrying their bizarre burden toward a graveyard behind the church, where a freshly dug, open grave
awaited. The sight was too much for the traveler, and he ran the rest of the way to his friends house.
Not long after he arrived at his friends home, he could no longer contain himself, and began to explain
the bizarre event he had witnessed. No sooner did he finish, when his friends cat, that had been lying
quietly in front of the warm fireplace, suddenly jumped up! To their total bewilderment the cat spoke.
"Then I am the king of cats!!"
and with that, the cat shot up through the chimney and disappeared into the night!

Brrrrrr freaky! The lighting in the room with the chimney is fantastic! Cool piece! :)
Excellent job with the story and the image! The long procession of cats is something especial. Now I can go to sleep and dream with the new King-Cat.
Very cool posing and lighting and compilation of scenes to tell the story.
You really put a lot of work into this one! I agree that the indoor lighting is fantastic. It really has that "ghost story" feel to it. Love the look on the blond guy's face. The cat king is truly creepy. Wouldn't want to go to sleep with him in the room (gulp)! Wonder what happened to him after he flew up the chimney???
of course i agree with the other here. excellent artwork,Eric. !!!!!!!!! #:O) !!!!!!!!
Wonderful little story and great story board! Lattices are especially good for small details. Great use of them! I really like this story! Cool!
Great story.. Peter Straub..have you read the book that he co-wrote with Stephen King.. "The Talisman"..?? Awesome book..and this turned out great, nice interpretation and story!
Love this story and how you have illistrated it. Excellent work
Cute story. All my cats think they are king here.
I'm familiar with the story, I believe it's included in the Andrew Lang Fairy Book collection somewhere (sorry no idea which book anymore) but yes, it is an old folk tale. Sidenote: I kinda wish you'd done more with the landscape around the churchyard, it's a little empty.
Wawwww! Fantastique! J“adore le chat!
