Description
This time they had managed to get within three centuries of their own time period.
Who knows? Third try might be the charm...
Fortunately, in this era the technology needed to assess the wormhole was available. But the materials were scarce and their passes didn't work on anything here. So once again they had to scramble.
Locating what they needed was easy enough. Of course, the moment they hacked the IntergalacticNet without proper security codes, their presence was detected by GlobeCommuniKay. They'd expected that. After all, before the Dark Wars, GCK was power incarnate. Their fingertips reaching into galaxies that most hadn't even heard of.
GCK's strength, as most power is, was grounded in pure, undiluted information. Knowing and using said information to manipulate events to their advantage on the most extreme levels. GCK was at every board meeting, sitting in every war room, twisting every news story on more planets than one could imagine. GCK was in your video monitor, not merely culling what you did but watching you do it. GCK secretly ruled entire planets and was virtually unstoppable until the Dark Wars destroyed commerce as it had been known since the beginning of time.
And while most of recorded history from this period has been lost, they knew that very war, which would change everything, brewed as they raced to escape this era.
Unfortunately, GCK was able to ascertain exactly what they were doing. Worse, GCK figured out why.
With this data in hand, there was no way GCK could let them leave. After all, time travelers? From the future? The information at their disposal was priceless. GCK had to have them. And knowing this, they knew it was imperative GCK failed in that mission.
So here they were, trying to steal a pair of aircars outside the GCK-governed world police headquarters. But they needed them. These were the closest units with enough power to get them around quickly enough to prepare for the wormhole.
For a couple of seconds it looked like it'd be easy. After ten seconds it was obviously too easy.
That's when the cyborg squad materialized.
"Shit," she muttered, "I hate cyborgs."
"Well," he said, "why don't you tell them. Maybe they'll just go away."
Snarling, she was reminded that while she trusted him with her life, she didn't like his sense of humor one iota.
