As requested, here is a close-up of the stone face of the jaguar at the Jaguar temple at Lamanai, Belize. In front, our native guide and decendant of the Maya, Capt. Chico, is describing how his ancestors would leave offerings in the largest openings. Those openings are on either side of the jaw, with the nose holes in the middle and the twin slit hole on top for the eyes. The holes on either side were the ears. I'm sure it was much more recognizable 1,000 years ago. Lamanai actually has the distinction of being the longest continually inhabited Mayan settlement, well into the beginning of this century. Those inhabitants obviously let the neighborhood slide...but the people of Belize are dilligently restoring this once great city. This is not an easy task, considering it is in the middle of the jungle. Look for an image of the largest temple in Lamanai tomorrow.
