Description

Digital Photo -- unretouched Louisbourg Fortress, Nova Scotia. Sep 01 Berthing area for the enlisted troops. Two men to a bunk. Lots of rather cramped little rooms like this. Must have been 'cozy,' but probably beat the heck out of prison or starvation. Per the guide, most of the troops were folk with little prospects for getting ahead back in the old country. Here they stood a chance of learning a trade while off duty: working as stonemasons on the royal buildings was considered to be choice work as it paid well -- in addition to their soldiers' wages. Others would moonlight as smiths, carpenters, fishermen, etc. Enjoy.
