Description
Yep, you read that right. This is a model I bought some time ago but with my own textures on it — though the tyre textures are derived from the ones that came with it so I can't take much credit for those.
The Ford HDT-960 was launched in 1961 and sold until 1966, when they replaced it with something less ugly. To save money they didn't design custom bodywork for the HDT-960, they reused the bodywork from a much smaller truck and patched it. See that goofy looking semi-circular door on the side of the cab? That was a storage compartment on this model, but on the original vehicle the bodyshell was designed for it was the wheel well. Yes, really, they cheaped out that much. This was the worst looking version, the sleeper cab, with that odd lump patched onto the back for the bed. At the time it was considered one of the ugliest trucks of its era (yes there were even uglier designs), though nowadays some truck collectors are eager to buy and restore them. And yes, just as some people buy and restore old cars, there are people who buy and restore old trucks, and one guy in Texas apparently has over thirty trucks from the 1930s through to the 1970s. Anything later than the 1970s and he has no interest. I should not have been as surprised as I was to learn that some people collect old trucks, but there we are.
Not long after I bought this I decided I didn't like the way it looks and bought the other truck you can see in my gallery instead, but recently I decided this might actually be useful in one of my stories, so I imported it into Blender again and started work on UV mapping it, texturing it and then rigging. I still think it's ugly, but to avoid having all the trucks on the road being the same model I will use it, even if it is only ever used to fill out the background of one of the road-trip images.
