Description
The vehicle in the picture is a Ford Model T truck of the American Field Service (AFS). The AFS was an organization of American voluteers formed in 1914 to assist the French and Belgian soldiers during World War One. AFS volunteers were most famous for helping the French wounded with medical and transport care away from the battlefield. Money raised in the United States allowed the AFS to purchase British or French produced Ford Model T trucks for use as transportation of wounded or sick soldiers. The French wording on th truck can be translated as "Maximum load 3 lying down or 4 sitting." The AFS continued the good work after American troops began to arrive in 1917. In October of 1917 the U.S. Army absorbed the AFS into the Army Ambulance Service. The AFS is credited with rescuing over 400,000 Alied wounded during WW1. The pictured AFS ambulance is on display at the Word War One Musem in Kansas City, Missouri.
