Not really a joke as such but it is based on a cartoon I saw some years ago. I found it quite amusing at the time.

I really liked this image right away, but now that you ask, I haven't figured out what the science joke is
It refers to the Doppler shift, The Doppler effect is the change in the frequency or, equivalently, the period of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the source of the wave.
The best known version of this effect is demonstrated with sound, the pitch is higher as the the sound source approaces and becomes lower as ir recedes.
A similar phenomena happens with light where, as the source approaches, the frequency of the light wave is compressed into the blue part of the spectrum and the object also appears compressed. As it recedes, the wave is stretched down to the red end of the spectrum and the object appears elongated.
