The final and decisive attack on the German battleship Tirpitz took place on November 12, 1944.
Codenamed Operation Catechism, 32 modified Royal Air Force (RAF) Avro Lancaster bombers launched the strike against the battleship, which was anchored near Tromsø, Norway. The aircraft deployed 12,000 lb (5.4-tonne) "Tallboy" earthquake bombs. Following multiple direct hits and near-misses, the Tirpitz capsized and sank within minutes, permanently destroying the vessel.

My Father was in the Royal Navy and, for a while, was with a division that was searching for Tirpitz. He never saw it though - he transferred to a different ship with a promotion. He was, however, torpedoed while with a skeleton crew manning a decommissioned aircraft carrier to Canada for re-fitting as an entertainment ship. Excellent image of this feared ship though. :-)
My wife's grandmother had four brothers who all perished in WWII. Two were in the Navy—one was assigned to the Bismarck and one to U-555, and both went down with their ships. One was on the Eastern Front and fell there, and one was in the Air Force as a gun commander on an 8.8 cm Flak; he fell in France in 1944.
