Description
Escher’s Waterfall is easy enough to construct in axonometric projection, but much more difficult to render in Bryce 7, which has the rather peculiar limitation of a camera field of view of just 1°.
A funny detail: with this focal length, roughly equivalent to a 1200 mm lens on full frame, the real-world depth of field would be infinitesimal. But Bryce’s depth of field is virtual, so I was able to blur the background quite nicely and make the foreground stand out.
As you probably know, Escher’s original drawing is in portrait format, whereas I converted it to landscape. What I have always liked most about the landscape version is actually the background rather than the foreground: those cultivated terraces climbing up the slope. I tried to expand and reinterpret them, and I had a lot of fun doing it.
Technically speaking, I could spend the whole of next winter refining and enriching those terraces. So, in the end, this is still a work in progress.
I simulated radiosity using semi-reflective materials. Good old Bryce still has a lot to say.
The subtle, print-like hatching was added in FotoSketcher. Everything else is pure Bryce.
I hope you enjoy the work that went into it, and my little homage to the great Escher.

Outstanding M. C. Escher inspired work. This was certainly not an easy undertaking and the result looks fantastic.
Neat Escher- themed work...
Escher sends his regards. Looks great.
Escher was a genius and this is an excellent tribute to his work. Very nicely done. :-)
