Description
Hello dear friends,
Here is another drawing, made with pen and colored pencils.
The poem is on my blog: "Art of Survival with PTSD", where I use the name 'Mies'.
At first I wanted to use the title "hang in there" because of the figures in the drawing.
Anyway, thank you very much for visiting, it's very much appreciated.
Naturally Drawn:
Like an unwritten page,
as green as grass,
with nature
as her source of inspiration.
Naturally drawn,
taken from life,
Mies created this drawing
of the final hour—
the hour
that has not yet struck,
because Mies
has not yet been defeated.
Even though life
is, for the moment,
no damn picnic.
-------------------------
Natuurlijk getekend:
----------------------------
Als een onbeschreven blad
zo groen als gras
als inspiratiebron
de natuur
.
Natuurlijk getekend
uit het leven
gegrepen
maakte Mies deze tekening
van het laatste uur
.
Dat nog niet heeft geslagen
omdat Mies nog niet
verslagen is
.
Ook al is het leven
even geen
katte…pis
.

Sweet
Thank you so much, Magic!
A very communicative smile in the middle. I like smiling pictures
Yes, Henry, I like to smile sowieso ;-)
How true it is: "life is no picnic" (although some may seem have more good times than others). Impressive poem.
Thank you so much, Herwig!
wow, Jacomina (or "Mies"), what a complex poem to go with your drawing! (Warning: This is a long, rambling comment! You might want to bring a lunch and some water to drink...)
The poem: Though the poem seems to acknowledge that life it not great, right now, you are holding on, and you remain undefeated, because life hasn't struck you down yet. Even though it's no picnic---I love your colloquial use of "kattepis"! I think this is the first poem I've read of yours that used that word! In English we'd say, "that ain't cat-piss!" Meaning, "That isn't even as good as cat-piss!" (I.e., it's bad.) And I love how you break the word into 2 syllables, to match the last line of the previous stanza ("verslagen is"---"katta...pis"). Both lines have the same break...
I did some research on this! I really did...I dived into this poem:
Does "Dat nog niet heeft geslagen (etc)" relate to the saying "Mies is niet verslagen, de klok heeft nog niet geslagen"? It seems to (from my brief snooping around). And I also came upon a discussion of "Aap Noot Mies..." A primer for young students? If this is true, this "little poem" of yours is full of references and humor...you're playing with words and double-meanings and poems of the past, etc. It's unfortunate that there's no way to translate those things into English, because it's a pretty sly poem! (And you have end-rhymes---natuuur/laatste uur...verslagen is/katte...pis. This little poem is packed!) It's also not 'everyday' that you end a poem---in translation---with "even though life is, for the moment, no damn picnic". Lol. Putting in some colloquial sarcasm in two languages! You got the little "punch" both in English and Dutch.
But the deeper meaning is there: The struggle with PTSD (and with a painful past, and constant struggle in the present) is always there; demanding that you stay strong, and stay 'above' life's struggles as much as you can. It's a poignant image of how hard you must work with the struggles life has foisted on you...and every day.
And the drawing: On the one hand, it evokes the crowded quality of nature (which you begin your poem with), but also how all those little creatures seem to be holding onto each other, to keep from falling...everyone seems to hold onto a string or cord from the next creature...and on and on. But it's also funny---a kind of nature-riot: You have little people, bugs, plants with faces, winged things, crawling things and flowering things.....it's a nature's Carnevale, the wild day before Lent---when everyone goes crazy...it's giddy and drunken! I don't know if I'm getting it all, but I can definitely feel the humor here, and the wild effort to "hang on". You've been through a lot, Jacomina, and this drawing-and-poem capture it all, and with a sense of wild humor. This is terrific. I'm just sorry the struggle is so real for you. I wish it wasn't. I'm glad you can create humor in its wake...(and end with kattepis...i know that's colloquial, not literal; but it's a riot, in the context of the piece)
I hope you and Karel are handling the heat and fires. All kinds of blessings to you! And sorry for the 16 page comment! I hope you don't need a nap afterwards...
