(steve is such a loyal soul...he always comments, always does it when he sees the upload...he's a real backbone here...) Thank you, Barb! This was a great surprise! Like so many others, I always associated Pisa with the bell tower. The church has such a frontal, 'severe' facade: It must hit you in the face, in person. It's old, I know that (I mean middle-middle ages). I noticed the beautiful mosaics in the "tympanum" (in the arch over the doorways ((just in case you don't know or remember the word)) ). Beautiful gold and other colors. I'm told that the originals are indoors, but I wouldn't know. Amazing how many people are lined up to go inside, when it was in the 100's fahrenheit. Very clear bright light---must have been a very sunny day. And there are statues on the corners of the roofs---thos saints gotta be really hot!

And then the baptistry...FIrst, you captured the sun directly behind the topmost statue---great effect! Really! It's like the opening of 2001 (the film, with the sun shining over the monolith). That is a huuuuge baptistry! I didn't know they made them that big. It's like, if you go into that place, you're gonna come out with a halo and free ticket to paradise. I gotta read up on this place: Do they have baptisms on the upper floors? That's really a massive-feeling structure. And you got it in shadow (which makes it even more mysterious). (It's telling the tower, "take THAT, showoff!") When you look at the people, it really show you how tall those doors were.

Love this, Barb---thanks for much for posting them! (Did you get "cathedral'd out" when you were there? I mean like "If I see one more church, I swear..." I mean even the saints would get a little church'd out...esp in that heat! You got real clarity and presence in these photos. I'm really glad you posted them. Grazi, Signora! Wonderful captures.

Baptisms are on the ground floor, there's a balcony/walkway around the upper floor. I did not climb the stairs. :) Yes, I was "cathedraled out." Unfortunately, it hit me while we were at Notre Dame, the entire group just sat in the pews and no one bothered to take photos. We were all just trying to survive the heat at that point after 30 hours of flights and no sleep. (most of Notre Dame was still blocked off anyway)
