wow barb, great to see these! (I can see your preference for italia!) It's great that you got to see these amazing places. And during a torpid heat wave! (though where you live, it's like you took europe's heat with you---I have a feeling you're gonna be reeeeallly happy when winter comes...)

The Eiffel I know was built as a feat of early modern 'muscularity' and highly "functional" design. It's beautiful, though I've not stood in front of it. I know it's lit up wildly at night---hope you got to see it then. In a city that doesn't have a lotta high rises, the Eiffel must stand out. Also, it looks hot in that photo, and hazy! I don't know how you survived being out every day in that amazing heat. You must've bathed in ice for 3 days afterwards...

The Pisa really does lean. (I read that it's because of the soft soil. Nice planning, guys!) In your photo, someone's peeking out from the second floor---i love it. You had beautiful light when you were there. The tower's what---a bell tower? I know there's a cathedral out of frame---did you see it close up? I assume there are crowds around all these amazing places...(Poor cathedral. It's gotta be thinking, "Hey! What'm I, chopped liver??? Everybody looks at my little brother---the showoff---but not me!!!") You took very clear bright shots, Barb. You had to be wilting out there...

The Il Duomo! I always loved that place. You posted the dome and side. I know it was designed over centuries, and this is a renaissance design, if I recall. (There's medieval too.) What a stunning facade. You captured the drama of the dome and all those angles. It's got a grand 'monotony' to it, doesn't it: It must feel overpowering in person. A grand photo.

And finally the colluseum. It seems the crowd is in the background---you must've been on an elevation here. Amazing that this place was used for real barbarism, but now it looks like the ghost of some grand sports stadium. Your photo captures the ghost-like feel of the place. I've never been to Italy, so I wouldn't know. But it stands so proudly, despite its decay. Real clarity in this shot too. (Man, how did you surive being out in that heat all day long!)

What a trip you had---so many monumental things in so short a time. I hope you can go back one day. Great to see these, Barb. I imagine you came home with 2000000000 photos in your phone. It was probably bulging...thanks for sharing. Next time you go, I hope it's 70 degrees. Stay cool! Loved seeing these!

The Eiffel Tower was actually closed due to the heat; no climbing. No, we didn't get to see it at night. Pisa does lean. It's hard to capture the lean. The Duomo, and the cathedral next to it, took over 350 years to build, I believe. The Colluseum is rather spooky. The history is as huge as the ruins. The sidewalk around the building is high in spots... navigating the walkways was fun in the heat, too haha.

Wonderful series Barb. I just recently watched a documentary on TV that, among other things, featured the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Apparently, it has since undergone extensive stabilization work, so it seems you can now climb all the way to the top of the tower. The view from up there is said to be very beautiful.
