Short Story: (Numb)
english:
The window is open.
Not because I want fresh air. I watch the world and how it keeps sinking deeper into itself every single day.
The bass pounds through the apartment. Somewhere, someone is screaming through the speakers.
Something about pain, betrayal, or hatred.
Doesn't really matter.Metal doesn't lie.
People do.
I sit on the windowsill. A cigarette between two fingers. The smoke drifts outside....or back inside.
Doesn't matter to me. Who the hell cares? Down below, the neighborhood moves the way it does every damn day.
The same faces. The same routines. The same illusion that anyone here actually knows what they're doing.
Over there. A woman. Maybe in her mid-thirties. Both arms loaded with grocery bags.
She stops at the back of her car.
One of those modern things that's supposedly smart. She keeps waving her foot under the rear bumper.
Once.
Twice.
Five times.
Nothing.
Even more frantically.
As if the car is eventually going to feel sorry for her.
I take another drag from my cigarette.
"Come on... dance a little more."
She keeps trying. Nothing happens.
Of course it does. Then she loses her patience. The bags crash onto the pavement.
A pack of apples rolls across the parking lot. Now she's digging through her pockets,
swearing while searching for her key. So much for "intelligent technology".
Back then, all you had to do was put a key in the lock. Now you apparently need a degree in ballet.
I let out a quiet snort.
Not because it's funny. Because it's sad. People build machines that are supposed to make life easier...
...only to spend even more time explaining to those machines what they want.
A few yards farther down the street, a man is walking. Or rather......his body is.
His eyes never leave the phone in his hand. His thumb keeps scrolling.
Again............and again.
Maybe the next post will save his life. Maybe enlightenment is hiding behind the next video.
Behind him trots a little dog. Its leash drags several feet behind it across the pavement.
The dog stops. Sniffs around. Looks left. Looks right. Its human doesn't notice.
I honestly don't think he even knows what his dog looks like today. He'd probably only notice
if his phone vibrated and told him:
"Your pet has become disconnected."
Convenient.
That way he wouldn't even have to look up. I lean my head against the window frame.
The music changes.
Guitars.
Drums.
Screaming.
*Numb* from Linkin Park.
At least it's something that can still make me feel something. Something that still reaches me.
Sometimes I wonder...when people decided to experience their entire lives through screens.
They photograph sunsets...instead of watching them.
They text "I miss you."...instead of calling someone.....or actually visiting them.
They buy watches.......and never have any time.
They buy cars.......that are supposed to open their own doors just by "dancing around them".
Then they lose the key.
They buy dogs......and forget there's a living creature at the other end of the leash.
They call it progress........I call it occupational therapy.
I don't get it. I've never understood why people are so desperate to belong.
To trends.
To opinions.
To groups.
To anything.
They've worn their masks for so long that they actually believe the mask is their face.
Sometimes I wonder how many of them look into the mirror every morning...and actually see themselves.
Or just the version that's supposed to function today. I crush my cigarette into the ashtray.
It's full. Like always.
Outside, the performance goes on. Tomorrow the same people will be down there again.
With the same problems. The same screens. The same conversations. The same masks.
And I'll probably be sitting here again. By the open window. With a cigarette. Music. A glass of whiskey...
...and the comforting thought that I never tried to become one of them.
That's probably the only thing...I'm truly proud of.

I don’t usually comment but I felt compelled to when I saw this. The image and the story really moved me and the message really hits hard with what’s going on in the world.
Thank you for posting.
The fact that you normally don't leave comments doesn't bother me at all. I don't comment very often either. Usually only when I find something truly exceptional, or, as in your case, when a piece of writing or a story combined with an image genuinely moves me. Otherwise, I tend to stay in the background as well.
So I'd like to sincerely thank you for your kind words. Thank you for taking the time to let me know that what I create isn't entirely in vain.
..very impressive bw scene
Beautiful!
