Fantastic scene. I first read about space elevators in a book by Arthur C. Clarke called 'The Fountains of Paradise', in which he describes the construction of such a device. :-)
Yes, I know the feeling. The idea is still great—if only we finally had a "steel cable" that could actually handle it...
There has been talk of the possibility of using some sort of carbon fibre to create a cable strong enough to allow the construction of space lifts. I'm not sure I'll see such a thing in my lifetime though. :-)
As far as I know, that would be carbon nanotubes. However, so far they can apparently only produce them on a centimeter scale—a bit short for this purpose...
