Description
This was one of the U.S. Navy's first operational jet fighter planes. It really was an experimental type with only 33 being produced between 1946 and '48. It looks like a cross between the successful North American P-51 Mustang and North American's F-86 (FJ-2 in Navy service) Saber at the same time. The Fury sits in between these two classic types. The FJ-1 had only one engine and lacked the power to be a competitive fighter. The lack of a swept wing and tail sufaces would be rectified with the F-86 along with a more powerful engine. The FJ-1 was operational aboard two aircraft carriers briefly in 1948 before being relegated to testing and reserve squadrons. This Fury was photographed at the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola NAS.

Great photo of the Fury!
Thanks! The museum was closed to most casual visitors for a number of years due to political quarrels over the budget and protection of the Naval Air Station. Currently non-Defence Department civilian visitors can only visit on Sarurdays and Sundays between 9AM and 3PM after being vetted by security at the gate.
