Retuning to the Mabinogion, after a long absence. I fond one of the most interesting aspects of these Welsh myths is the ambivalance of most of the main characters; even the great heroes are not above decidedly un-heroic, even despicable deeeds. Today its another interpretation of Blodeuwedd (meaning both " flower-face" and "owl" in Welsh). In brief, she was created from the blossoms of broom, oak, and meadowsweet by the magician Gwydion, to be the fairest of maidens and wife to the hero Lleu Llaw Gyffes who was cursed by his mother never to have a human wife. She betrays Lleu and, whith her lover plots to kill him, for which Gwydion turns her into an owl (I've illustrated that part of the story before). However, she also represents the beauty of spring, and has been elevated by modern pagans to the status of goddess of spring and flowers. Modern interpretations of her tale rather gloss over the murder plot and focus more on the theme of forced fate and liberation, representing her transformation to an owl as freedom from a marriage not of her choosing... so here is a variation along those lines.
