**Echoes Above the City**
The rain fell in fine lines from the sky, making the neon signs of the metropolis spill like liquid light across the rooftops. On a ledge high above the noise of the streets sat a young man. The left side of his body was made of metal and fiberglass, gleaming dully in the glow of the billboards. Weariness was reflected in his human eye; in the cybernetic one, a faint blue HUD flickered.
Beside him lay his dog. Or what had once been a dog. Steel ribs rose and fell in a calm rhythm, red sensor eyes watching the darkness attentively. Every now and then its chrome tail twitched when a siren wailed below.
The young man pulled his coat tighter around himself and rested a hand on the cool head of his companion. “Still all there,” he murmured—more to himself than to the dog. The dog replied with a soft, mechanical hum that somehow sounded comforting.
They had become observers in this city, guardians of the rooftops, far from the glaring streets and the people who no longer looked up. The rain washed away the grime of the night, but not the memories lodged in the circuitry and in the young man’s heart.
As, in the distance, the sun slowly began to lose against the neon, the cyborg dog rose and looked at him. Time to move on. Together they leapt from rooftop to rooftop—two half-machines in a city that had long since forgotten what it meant to be fully human.
