Here's a sneak peek at my last project for the year, "Shorebirds v5: Storks of the World". This set will include the 15 remaining storks I haven't done yet. Featured here is the Lesser Adjutant which looks pretty prehistoric to me. The English name (Adjutant) is derived from this storks stiff "military" gait when walking on the ground. The Lesser Adjutant is endemic to Nepal, India and Sri Lanka to southern China (now probably extinct), Indochina, Greater Sundas and Bali. It prefers mangroves, mudflats, coastal swamp, marshes, flooded grassland, lakes, paddy fields. It is a "Near Threatened" with 8,000-15,000 adult individuals left and a declining population trend. This is due to persistent and unregulated harvesting of eggs and chicks at colonies, loss of nesting trees and loss and degradation of wetland habitats. It primarily eats fish (especially mudskippers), but also hunt frogs, reptiles, crustaceans, locusts, rats and some carrion.
