Und als die Zahnräder endlich klickten, war es da. Das Zischen, das Brodeln, der Dampf, der jetzt durch die Werkstatt kriecht wie eine beleidigte Erinnerung. Die kleine, rothaarige Elfe Kira Copperfly, Auszubildende in der Werkstatt des Transitium, steht aufrecht auf der obersten Stufe, eine Laterne in der einen, das dicke Lehrbuch in der anderen Hand. So geht das mit der Augenhöhe. „Ich bin bereit“, sagt sie. Ihre Stimme ist fest. Ihr Blick glüht. Der Gürtel an ihrer Hüfte, noch leer. Aber nicht mehr lange, wenn es nach ihr geht. Allein war sie nicht. Sie hatte ihre kleinen Gefährten um Hilfe gebeten. Den alten Uhr-Uhu mit den weisen Augen, der nun die aufgeschlagene Arbeitsanleitung studiert, als hinge davon das Schicksal der Zahnräder ab. Und das kleine, blecherne Maskenwesen, das sich tapfer bemüht, eben diese zu verstehen und behilflich zu sein. Zusammen hatten sie es versucht. Mit Mut, mit Neugier. Und mit einem Hauch Chaos. Die Lehrmeisterin, Prudence Clockwise, sagt nichts. Noch nicht. Ihr Monokel glänzt kühl, während der Rauch sich langsam senkt. Ihre Haltung ist wie die Uhr an der Wand. Unbeweglich. Denn wer mit Zeit arbeitet, lernt vor allem eines: Nicht alles, was klickt, läuft auch rund. Was die Kleine als Fortschritt sieht, sieht die Meisterin als Zeichen. Nicht für Talent, sondern für Ungeduld. Und doch… Ein Funke hat sich entzündet. Vielleicht nicht in der Maschine. Aber in der Schülerin. Die Uhr tickt weiter. Der Gürtel bleibt leer. Noch. And when the gears finally clicked into place, it happened: the hissing, the bubbling, the steam creeping through the workshop like an offended memory. The small, red-haired elf Kira Copperfly, apprentice in the Transitium workshop, stands tall on the top step – a lantern in one hand, the thick apprentice manual in the other. That’s how you reach eye level. "I’m ready," she says. Her voice is steady. Her gaze burns. The toolbelt on her hip is still empty. But not for long, if she has any say in it. She wasn’t alone. She had asked her little companions for help: – the old clockwork owl with wise eyes, now studying the open instructions as if the fate of all gears depended on it, – and the small, tin-faced mask creature doing its best to understand and assist. Together, they tried. With courage, with curiosity – and a touch of chaos. The master craftswoman, Prudence Clockwise, says nothing. Not yet. Her monocle gleams coldly while the smoke slowly settles. Her posture is like the clock on the wall – unmoving. Because those who work with time learn one thing above all else: Not everything that clicks runs smoothly. What the girl sees as progress, the master sees as a sign – not of talent, but of impatience. And yet… a spark has ignited. Maybe not in the machine. But in the apprentice. The clock keeps ticking. The belt remains empty. For now.
