In totalitarian and autocratically governed states such as the former Soviet Union, North Korea, or China, monumental buildings, usually of a sober structure, are repeatedly noticeable. They have two things in common: they are enormous, thus impossible to miss, and are often located in places heavily frequented by large numbers of people. They often have inscriptions that contain either slogans of perseverance for the population, homage to the respective leader, or aggressive propaganda against some real or imagined enemy. But it's not only so-called rogue states that have such buildings. They can also be of a religious nature, as in Thailand f.e., my wife's country of origin. Thailand is certainly far from being a dictatorship, but many states apparently succumb to the temptation to erect monumental buildings. I modified this concept by placing the buildings in the middle of nowhere, making them even more impressive because other external stimuli are missing. Not that I'm a fan of dictatorships (quite the opposite!), but these architectural features simply intrigued me, for the simple reason that, as far as I know, no one has attempted them before.
