Description
Hello Rendosians !
This time I upload a picture of japanese lanterns named tōrō (灯籠 meaning "light basket" or "light tower")
This picture was captured in the shinto shrine of Kasuga, in Nara. This shrine is known for its 3000 lanterns of stone or bronze. Some of them are very old and belong to the Nara period (from 710 to 794) !
At first, toro were gifts for Buddha and were placed in front of buddhist temples but since the Heian period (794-1185) they are also used in shinto shrines.
In August, Japanese light up these lanterns in order to guide the spirit of the deacesed to come back. Most of the Japanese come back in their birthtown in order to accomplish this ritual.
Thank you so much for your interest in my last picture of Kinkaku-ji and your kind comments !
Have a grat day / evening / night
Hugs

Great capture!
Great capture and information! Thank you for sharing!
Nice angle on this shot
