Description
Back to Beowulf;
One of the more intriguing characters in the poem is Grendel's mother. Despite being one of the main antagonists, not a great deal is said of her. Many modern interpretations of her as monstrous, wretched or a hag date back to a potentially rather erroneous translation of a key phrase (which I have used as the title of this work) from 1922. I shan't delve into the semantic arguments here, but suffice it to say that this is hotly disputed amongs scholars, and the current view leans more towards a "lady warrior" or "fierce woman", possibly of noble status, rather than "monster". To my mind this fits far better into the narrative, as she is only involved in the story as she seeks redress for the killing of her son, which is consistent with the heroic ethic of blood-feud.
So I have returned to the little that we know; she was a woman of the mere, possibly a warrior woman of some standing, potentially with supernatural attributes... here she pauses by the mere, contemplating retribution for the mortal wounding of Grendel.
