Description
In the wake of humanity’s first manned mission to Alpha Centauri, the U.S. Secretary of Defense stormed into a high-level briefing. Admirals and generals sat in stunned silence as he roared, "How the hell did this happen! Letting the Chinese claim the first interstellar triumph in human history! How embarrassing! What sort of incompetent idiots do we have running our space program! I wanna list of those responsible for this!"
In a public interview the following day a science reporter commented: “Our leaders are overreacting and squabbling over a minor setback, like spoiled children throwing tantrums over a lost game. They need to get over it, grow up, and focus on the boundless possibilities of the future.”
As tempers cooled, all focus returned to progress.
Nations with sufficient resources immediately began upgrading their FTL drives to level-2, rendering the older Level-1 models obsolete for all but interplanetary travel.
Within two years, the United States had established a sprawling mining operation on Alpha Centauri A-c1, while China and Russia set up their operations on Proxima b, each nation staking its claim in the stars.

Well those in power in your story have no similarities to the amazing people running the countries here on good old Earth the last 4 yrs now do they...lol (Sorry but the narrative gave me a good laugh and could actually picture those people speaking the words)
This is a great installment to your story and I wonder are we getting ready for a conflict between worlds or is there a yet unknown element hiding in the wings??? I shall wait with baited breath to get my answers in the next installment :)

Funny, I never planned these short little chapters to get so complex ... hope I don't burn out again ... lol!
This you see right here actually takes place about 90 years before Captain Flynt's adventures; Earth still has some growing pains but eventually they become somewhat more civilized, but elsewhere on other colonies across explored space it's still wild and unpredictable -- mostly human criminals and pirates. Self-aware droids are also about to be created at this time.

I do love your stories and find them inspirational...eg my renders Space Port and Supply Base :)
It's amazing how much stuff I can tie into the main story ... like the Strange Visitors, which was an 'unexpected' prequel to this. And of course the Vampires too. Even my 'Vacation' is a rather comical prequel ... lol.
Playing the whole story in my mind's eye, like a huge movie, keeps me inspired to discover new adventures as if I was a character in that movie --- even though I don't get many fans at all.:-)
